Racing makes better sailors

MBJA teaches students how to sail — and how to race. Racing classes expand and solidify knowledge and confidence around safety aboard. Repeated exercises and on-water drills help students master techniques while developing muscle memory. Even if the ultimate goal is cruising, this experience is invaluable for understanding what safe, efficient sailing means.

Back for 2026 are race coaches LJ Nykamp (Opti) and Nadia Reynolds (Laser and 420).

What we focus on

This program is geared toward younger sailors with some sailing experience who have expressed an interest in competitive sailing. The primary focus is improving boat speed, rounding marks, starts and finishes, and basic racing tactics.

Regatta participation on Fridays is included and strongly encouraged — these are perfect events for beginners. Students participate in the WMYSA and MBJA Club Series on alternating Fridays. Tuition covers training at the sailing center and coaching at regattas.

We recommend two or more sessions for sailors who really want to improve. Graduates should consider joining Team Mac and the MBJA High School Team.

Club racing on Fridays

On Fridays opposite the WMYSA regattas we run club racing in Optis, Lasers, and 420s during the afternoon. If you're signed up for race class, you're automatically in the mini-regatta. We strongly encourage students to join our inter-club Friday racing even if they aren't registered for that session.

WMYSA Team Mac racing

To help students learn what it's like to be part of a race team and compete against other West Michigan clubs, we participate in West Michigan Youth Sailing Association regattas held on Fridays at nearby lakes throughout the summer. For qualified sailors, travel to out-of-state regattas is available and encouraged.

Tuition covers training and coaching at regattas. Registration fees, travel, and additional regatta expenses are not included. The 2026 WMYSA regatta schedule will be announced soon.

Do we need a boat?

All boats are provided by MBJA. If you have your own Opti, you're welcome to store it in the MBJA area during the session you're registered for.
