Adult Fundamentals

Enjoy a fun evening class with other adults to learn the basics of sailing or brush up on rusty skills. This course covers the fundamentals and provides a solid foundation for newcomers.

The on-the-water portion is taught aboard one of our J22 keelboats, which provides a secure, stable ride with a cockpit large enough for four students plus an instructor.

The class covers all aspects of boat handling: sailing terminology and boat parts, maneuvers and points of sail, and rules of the road.

Adult Learn to Race

Over the years, adult fundamentals students have asked, "What's next? Can I learn to race and get into a big boat program here, even if I'm not a member?" The answer is yes.

This class teaches more on-water skills and racing specifics with an instructor guiding you and your team. Boat teams are established the first night of class, so you can sign up individually or with a friend.

It's a great opportunity to see what it's like to be a racer, and completion will give you the confidence to try your skills on another boat. Want to stay with the same team all summer? Sign up for both sessions.

Private lessons

Private lessons are available on the J22, or on a 420 if you're looking for a sportier lesson. For pricing and scheduling, call 616-796-8671 or email info@mbja.org.
